TCAP Writing Assessment
Administered at FHS to 11th Grade Students on Feb. 1st
The Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) Writing Assessment for 11th graders will be administered during school on Wednesday, February 1st. The Writing Assessment is a performance-based test administered to fifth, eighth, and eleventh graders in Tennessee. It evaluates students’ strengths and weaknesses in written communication. Students will be required to write a rough draft persuasive essay in response to an assigned prompt within the limited time period of 35 minutes. The essay will need to convince or influence the reader to agree with the writer’s point of view. The topic will need to be clearly stated by the student while the arguments to support his/her view should be developed through the use of facts, examples, and anecdotes. The writing samples are scored holistically using a 6 point scale rubric with 6 being the highest score. Sample essays and previous prompts can be found on the TN Dept of Education website: http://www.state.tn.us/education/assessment/writing.shtml. All juniors will be asked to bring a #2 pencil and a blue or black pen to the test. Parent information, regarding the assessment and scoring process, will be given to students to take home on Wednesday, January 25th. Please keep in mind that the students’ score on this test will determine their first grade in English 12. Also, students who score a 6 will get an extra college excused college day during their senior year
